Lesson Type : Reading

The Analysis of Teaching Material

This reading material narrates the writer’s visit to Musée d’Orsay, a world-famous art museum featuring some of the best-known paintings from the Impressionist movement of the 19th century. In this article, the writer manily introduces two of the greatest Impressionist painters, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, who made the deepest impression on him. The topic in this material mathes the theme of this unit — The Art of Painting . 

The Analysis of Students  

Students in this class are mostly natives, few of whom have access to an art museum. Besides, their limited knowledge about styles of painting such as Impressionism may also add to their difficulty in understanding this material.

Teaching Objectives

After this class , students are expected to :

{C}1.      {C}Name and remember some famous Impressionist painters and their masterpieces.

{C}2.      {C}Summarize some typical features of impressionism. 

{C}3.      {C}Explain the influence of Impressionism on art history.

Teaching Important and Difficult Points

{C}1.      {C}The meanings of “ impression” in the title.

{C}2.      {C}The techniques applied in Impressionism.

Teaching Procedures

Step 1:  Lead-in

Q1: If you could have three of these paintings on the walls of your classroom, which would you choose?

Q2: Can you recognize the following painting and its painter?

设计意图:用图片导入绘画艺术这一话题,让学生直观认识印象派绘画的特点。激发学生的好奇,为下文阅读作铺垫。

Step 2: Pre-reading

Activity 1:  Guide students to read the title and raise  questions.

Activity 2:  Ask students to predict what the style of the passage is?

设计意图: 在阅读文本之前,引导学生关注标题,培养学生分析问题的思维能力和探究精神。让学生预测文章内容和题材,使学生形成阅读期待,激发阅读兴趣。

Step 3:  Skimming to get the gist

Activity 1: Try to find one word or phrase as a key word in each paragraph.

Activity 2:  Try to divide  this passage into three parts.

设计意图: 引导学生运用略读策略抓住文本主旨大意,弄清文本结构,理清作者写作思路,培养学生的语篇概括能力。

Step 4 : Detailed-reading

Activity 1: True or Fasle

(     )   1. It was the first time that the wtiter had visited Musée d’Orsay.

Activity 2:  Group- discussion

Discuss in groups: What are the typical features of Impressionism paintings mentioned in the

passage?

设计意图:使学生了解印象派绘画代表人物及其代表作品,并通过讨论总结出印象派绘画典

型特点,培养学生对绘画艺术的鉴赏能力。

Step 5: Deep-reading

Activity 1: Reread the title and infer the meanings of “ first impression”

in this passage by group discussion.

Activity 2: Is Impressionism out of date compared with modern art? Give your reasons in groups.

设计意图: 回归文本标题,引导学生思考其含义,紧扣主题,在深

度阅读中培养学生推理能力。将现代艺术与印象派绘画进行比较,

使学生进一步认识到印象派绘画的艺术价值及其对现代艺术的深远

影响。

Step 6: Post-reading

Assuming you are studying  in Paris, last summer your parents , both of whom are crazy about Impressionism, came to visit you and they wanted to visit Musée d’Orsay. Please show them around the museum as their guide.

设计意图:创设新的情景模型,培养学生对本节课所学文本信息的语言输出能力,有效进行迁移。
